Methodology

How This Visualisation Works

Built with Observable Framework, Leaflet.js, and TopoJSON — a modern stack for interactive geographic data visualisation.

Step 1
Geographic Foundation

US county boundary data from the US Census Bureau, rendered as TopoJSON for efficient browser delivery. The map uses Leaflet.js with CartoDB dark tiles for a professional dark-theme basemap.

Step 2
Economic Data Model

Each county carries a seeded economic profile: GDP per capita baseline, annual growth rate, dominant industry sector, population, and employment. The model supports 2010–2024 time-series projection.

Step 3
Interactive Visualisation

Three colour modes — Industry classification, Growth rate heatmap, and GDP per capita gradient. A time slider animates economic evolution. Click any county for a detailed profile with rankings and peer comparisons.
